Changing Seasons: Embracing new routines with grace

The air feels different lately — mornings are cooler, routines are shifting, and I can sense another change unfolding. As moms, we move through so many seasons — of motherhood, home, and faith — and each one asks us to adjust our rhythms a little differently.

I have always been one to be chasing ‘balance’. I think if things will just slow down or if I can set a new routine then things won’t feel chaotic. I have 10 year old twins so as you can imagine our life is busy (much like everyone else). Side note: My personality is very much type A. Organizing is my jam! So when they were born my world was flipped upside down. And I feel like I have been chasing balance ever since.

“For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven.” – Ecclesiastes 3:1

So as you can imagine with twins I am overloaded with “stuff”. Double the clothes and toys, and a double packed calendar. For 10 years I have tried to have order and routines in our schedules and in our home, but they’ve never worked long term. I used to get frustrated with myself, normally ending in overwhelm and eventually a massive purge (insert rage cleaning here) haha!

I’ve been learning to see these transitions not as disruptions, but as invitations to slow down, listen, and reorganize what truly matters.

Over the last 10 years I have caught myself thinking “it will get easier as they get older”. That in fact is not the case. More stuff gets brought home and more activities find there way on to our calendar. But truthfully I wouldn’t want life any other way. I am learning that my systems haven’t failed. We outgrew them. Just like my kids grow out of clothes at the end of each season, we are growing too. We are constantly changing and moving into new seasons.

As you move through your own changing season, give yourself grace. You don’t have to do it all — just the next right thing for right now.

We did what worked for us in that season so going into the next season we have to find new routines and systems that work for the new season in life. I think there is so much beauty in that. We should always want to grow.

The truth is, things never go as planned. We set routines and systems to give us some sense of control and structure when we are faced with uncertainty when life’s disruptions happen (and they will happen).

The best advice I can give to myself is…

Focus on the One who will anchor us when life’s storms come.

Build a foundation on Christ. Think of it like building endurance for a race. Turn to Jesus now, focus on a relationship now, so when life feels unsteady you have a strong foundation to stand on.

Life will get chaotic and is constantly changing. We will continue to have to de-clutter and set new routines for all life’s seasons but we can walk through it securely with the One who is steady and our firm foundation.
