5 Things to Do When You Feel Completely Overwhelmed

When everything feels urgent, you don’t need to do more. You may simply need to pause, reset, and remember what matters.

Where do I even begin? The laundry, messages, meals, responsibilities, mental list, things you forgot, things you promised you’d do.

I know this feeling all to well. The overwhelm sets in and the mental list is on a constant loop. These feelings are all too real for lots of us but I have found ways to stop the spiral and take the next right step. I’m learning this isn’t about performance and you do not have to manage everything perfectly. Here is what has helped me most:

1. Stop before you start solving.

Not every overwhelmed moment needs an immediate productivity solution.

Pause. Breathe. Pray.

This is where abiding enters—not as another task, but as a reminder that you aren’t carrying everything alone.

2. Get it out of your head.

Write down everything that’s swirling around.

Not to create a giant to-do list.

To stop carrying it mentally.

Then you can actually see what’s there.

3. Ask: “What actually matters right now?”

The question isn’t “What could I possibly get done?

But:

What has actually been entrusted to me in this season?

Those are very different questions. This question is about stewarding the gifts you’ve been given. What matters most to you in this season?

4. Choose one faithful next step.

Not ten.

One.

You don’t need to solve the whole week tonight. You need to know what the next right thing is. Let it be that simple.

5. Create a small reset—not a complete life overhaul.

Clear the kitchen counter.
Set out tomorrow’s clothes.
Write down tomorrow’s priorities.
Prepare the coffee.
Close the laptop.

This final step can have the biggest impact for clearing my mind and letting myself rest. Set a timer and clear off the kitchen counters or any other task on this list then rest. Pay attention to the weight it takes off of you.

Small rhythms create breathing room.

Maybe peace doesn’t come from finally getting everything done.

Maybe peace comes when we stop measuring our faithfulness by how much we can accomplish.

We were never called to carry everything.

We are called to faithfully steward what God has placed in our hands.
