What makes you feel secure & worthy?
Is it striving? Is it achieving goals? Is it feeling like you have a purpose? Take a moment to reflect on these questions. Now I want to ask one more question: What is your heart posture? This is a question I recently came across so let’s dive deep for a minute. When you ask yourself these questions, what was your initial thought? Maybe it was something along the lines of I’ll feel secure when I have financial freedom, I’ll feel worthy when I have my degree or reach a specific career goal, when I get married or have kids I’ll have purpose, I will be secure and worthy when I reach my goal weight or when my house is perfectly organized. We all have different standards we measure success, status, security, and worthiness by. We can go on and on moving that “finish line” to say I will feel secure & worthy when I __________.
Why do we have the business/career goal we have?
Why do we workout, eat healthy, and diet?
Why do we have financial/career goals?
Why do we want our house to look like a picture in a magazine?
Hear me out, none of these are bad goals to have. I, myself have goals in all these areas of my life. And I am guilty of doing so for the wrong reasons at times. I have tried different “fad” diets, looked for ways to contribute to our family financially, and I’ve put unrealistic standards on keeping my home organized. Again I want to say, none of these are a bad thing. I am a very goal oriented person. I love to set goals. I am continually trying to be the best version of myself. But what is the purpose behind it? Am I striving for perfection? Am I looking for acceptance? Honestly I’ve been guilty of all of these so again I want to pose the question: What is your heart posture?
What is your heart posture?
This question stopped me in my tracks and it is a question I find myself reflecting on often. I could go into great detail giving you my answer and perspective on these few topics listed above but I think that would just be a distraction because this isn’t about me. I want to be honest. I don’t always know the answers and truthfully my answers would probably be different day to day depending on the situations and life going on around me so what I want to do is focus on what does matter.
What does this question mean? What is our heart posture? Our response should come from a place of humility, instead of pride. Our response should be to bring God glory so I have been asking myself these questions:
Am I seeking God’s will?
Am I walking aligned with His word?
What is the motive behind my desire and actions?
We can quote scripture and sing about the goodness of God, but let’s take a moment
Breathe,
Let go of the grip
Breathe Again
Let everything fall away, if even for just a moment
Now let’s return to God
Let’s set our intentions to be present with Him. Let’s align our heart posture with His will for our life. Let’s bring Him glory in all that we do for He is good.
God is Faithful & He is Merciful
I’m talking to myself now. Don’t grab back a hold of the control you so desperately want. Loosen the grip. We know God is good, but our flesh tells us that we need control. Let’s breathe again and this time let’s take in all that He is.
The same God who parted the sea and the same God who saved Jonah from the ultimate death from a raging sea and big fish. Can you imagine the pressure Jonah must’ve felt? At the beginning of the book of Jonah he thought he was in control, he was going to do things his way because he thought he knew best. His flesh said running from God would be the easier option. We see later in the book that in fact was not the case. But God always has the perfect plan. God could have turned his back on Jonah and chose to use someone else to carry our His will, but we see God pour out His mercy on Jonah. Jonah must have felt so hopeless in the belly of that big fish, sinking lower and lower to his pending death, but it was not the end. God only needed Jonah to surrender, He would take care of the rest.
The Good and Perfect Will of God
If we are being honest, I believe we can all relate to Jonah on some level. Go back to the beginning and think about how you initially answered those questions. My answers were self focused and my plan was to follow my steps to get there. So again, I remind myself, return to God. Surrender my plans to Him. Make sure the steps I take are to bring Him glory. We are never too far. When life feels heavy, we can lay it down. We don’t have to strive. We don’t have to struggle to find purpose. Goals are not bad. God wants to give us the desires of our hearts. One last time I want to ask and I pray we all continue to reflect on this question: What is your heart posture? If you are unsure or feel yourself tightening the grip of control I encourage you to seek His will. He is always close by and He wants us to draw near.
